How a School Develops Students

There are many different ways we grow. We can grow cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically. While a school is set up to promote cognitive growth, its existence as an institution also allows students to grow in all the other aspects.

In fact, many schools run events like tournaments and dances that promote student growth in these areas. Many schools also have counselors to assist students in their emotional growth.

Schools are somewhat adept at measuring cognitive growth in students but how should schools measure growth in the other 3 aspects? How should schools teach metacognitive understandings of social, emotional, and physical growth?

After all, whether we like it or not, development doesn't stop. In a world where too much importance, and time, is placed on academic development, schools that figure out how to effectively develop students socially, emotionally, and physically will have a competitive edge over other schools.

So how much time in school should be spent learning academic subjects?
